On Monday, May 14, 2012, a U.S. Federal Trademark Registration was filed by MOTOR-SCOOTER INTERNATIONAL for THE REAL CANNONBALL LOGO. The U.S.Patent and Trademark Office has given the THE REAL CANNONBALL trademark serial number 85624384.
In 2013 I will be teaming up with Alan Spears, president of the Motor Scooter International Land Speed Federation (MSILSF), to present the "Real Cannonball", a no holds barred run from coast to coast. Alan's group will be hosting the scooter contingent and I will be sponsoring the motorcycle end of things. For my part, I will be referring to the event as "The Real Cannonball- Tiddler Division". (TRC-TD)
Our plan is to begin the ride at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan, NY and ride to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, Ca. This is a trip of about 2,800 miles.
There will be 4 motorcycle classes.
Class I - unlimited 50cc and vintage up to 11Occ.
Class II - 125cc and vintage up to 160cc
Class III - 200cc and vintage up to 225cc
Class IV - 250cc and vintage up to 360cc
In an effort to keep this event close to what Brock Yates had envisioned, I will use my own adaptation of his words (which are printed in italics). "All competitors will (drive any vehicle of their choosing) ride any motorcycle of their choosing in the above
categories, over any route, at any speed they judge practical, between the starting point and the destination. The competitor with the lowest elapsed time is the winner."
Unlike the Cannonball of the 1970's that had no rules, TRC-TD will. We must have rider accountability and for this every competitor will be supplied with a log book for recording fuel stops. You must also obtain a timed, dated receipt at every fill up. Fuel capacity will be limited to your STOCK gas tank and an auxillary tank of up to 2.5 gallons. You must stop once every 300 miles for fuel regardless of your fuel capacity. Your auxillary tank must be securely fastened to your motorcycle, bungee straps are NOT considered to be a secure mount. All motorcycles must have a working head light, tail
light, brake light and horn. Turn signals are encouraged but many vintage motorcycles are not required to have them in their licensing state, modern motorcycles must have working turn signals. Motorcycles must have newer tires with ample tread depth. Safety
wiring of essential fasteners is encouraged but not mandatory. All riders must show a current valid drivers license and current motorcycle insurance card.
The Real Cannonball will depart Manhattan, NY at 7 AM EST on May 4th, 2013. This event will be Pre-registration only!! All entries must be received by April 1st,2013.
A website is currently being created for this event. Please refer to the current yahoo group for additional information which should come out towards mid July.
In 2003, Bill Murar, a career firefighter/paramedic, rode over 12,000 miles on a four corners tour of the US to raise much needed cash for the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Foundation. Many of these miles were ridden on a 1965 Sears 106SS motorcycle. This site is set up to inform people of the continuing fundraising efforts for pediatric burn victims by Bill and his wife, Joyce, a Registered Nurse. These efforts center around an annual motorcycle, moped and scooter endurance run, The Lake Erie Loop. The next Lake Erie Loop will take place the weekend of June 8-10, 2012. The ride will originate in NE Ohio, head west through Detroit, Mich. and Windsor, Ont. into Canada, east through Fort Erie and back into the US into Buffalo, NY, then back. Or, you can do it going the other way! 650 miles in a day!!! Not only can you help the burned kids by entering this ride, you can also put a few dollars in your own pocket.
